Drunken Mom Crashes On Southern State Pkwy.; Son Breaks Leg: Police
Louewanda Benjamin faces several felony counts, including first-degree vehicle assault with a previous conviction.

MALVERNE, NY — A mother was charged with driving drunk after a collision on the Southern State Parkway injured her young son on Tuesday afternoon, state police said.
A 2020 Toyota Camry, driven by Louewanda Benjamin, 37, of Amityville, struck the rear of a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox near Exit 17S (Hempstead Avenue), police said.
The accident caused Benjamin's 3-year-old son to suffer a broken leg. The driver of the Equinox suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation revealed Benjamin, who was not injured, was intoxicated. She was arrested and provided a .24% blood alcohol content.
Benjamin faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicle assault with previous conviction, aggravated DWI with child and previous conviction in 10 years, known as Leandra's Law.

Benjamin was being held for arraignment at Nassau County First District Court.
