Man Charged With Planting Skimmer Device on Bank ATM

The 47-year-old was arrested in Hewlett Thursday night.

A 47-year-old man was arrested Thursday night in Hewlett after he was caught removing a skimming device he is accused of planting on a bank ATM, police said.

According to police, Crimes Against Property Squad detectives responded to the Chase Bank located at 1304 Broadway after being notified by bank security that they had discovered a skimmer device in the ATM machine.

Detectives observed Vlad Mares, who has no known address, enter the ATM area and remove the device using a small pry bar, police said.

Mares was placed under arrest without incident at about 9:30 p.m.

Mares is charged with two counts of possession of a forged device and third degree grand larceny. He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
