Man Crashes Into Nassau Business, House While Fleeing Police

The house was occupied by six people, including two children, who needed to be evacuated from the home after the crash, police say.

A 53-year-old man wanted on a warrant upstate was arrested Saturday morning after he crashed his car into a business and then an occupied home while fleeing police in Nassau County, police said.

According to Nassau Police, a First Precinct officer on patrol observed Rodney Boone, of Baldwin, fail to use his turn signal while driving a black 2005 Dodge around 4 a.m. in Baldwin.

The officer activated his lights in the vicinity of Fenimore Place and Coes Neck Road and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Boone refused to pull over and continued to drive recklessly while heading north on Milburn Avenue, police said.

A short time later, Boone's car left the roadway and struck the Nassau Tire & Wheel building located at 219 S. Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, causing substantial damage to the business, police said.

The car was then redirected and struck a residential home next door at 217 S. Franklin Avenue, causing a gas leak. There were six people, including two children ages 4 and 6, in the home at the time. The residents were not injured, but they were evacuated due to the gas leak.

National Grid responded to shut off the gas and make repairs, police said. Boone was placed into police custody before being transported to a local hospital to be treated for complaints of pain, police said.

Boone is charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, fourth degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations and a outstanding warrant issued by the Albany County Sheriff’s Department for violating a family court order, police said.

Boone will be arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
