Man Scammed Elderly Woman Out Of Tens Of Thousands: Police

Police say he targeted an elderly woman in another state and had her send money to Long Island for him to pick up.

A Queens man was arrested on Thursday for running a scheme on a senior citizen from Ohio that cost her tens of thousands of dollars.

According to police, an 83-year-old woman was received a call at her home in Ohio on May 20 from a man claiming that her grandson had been arrested. She was told to send $9,600 to a Maryland address for her grandson's bail, and she did.

On May 22, the woman received another call telling her to send $6,000 to a Rockville Centre address, and she did. On May 24, the woman received a call from another man, who claimed to be her grandson's lawyer, telling her to send another $6,000 to the same Rockville Centre address to pay for bail again.

On May 29, the woman received another call from the man claiming to be her grandson's lawyer, police say, who told her she needed to send $8,900 to expunge her grandson's criminal record. The woman became suspicious and contacted the police.

Police say an investigation led to them arresting Dashill Jean, 32, of 147th Avenue, Rosedale, when he was seen picking up a package containing money sent by the woman.

Jean is charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny and attempted third-degree grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
