Man Stole, Altered LI Victim's Check Worth $13,500: Police

Anyone who may have been a victim of Christopher Mercado should contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS, police said.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — A Manhattan man was arrested for a grand larceny last summer in Rockville Centre, police said.

A 51-year-old victim mailed a personal bank check, which was altered and cashed for $13,500 by an unknown man, police said.

An investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Mercado, 28, police said.

Mercado is charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, third-degree grand larceny, second-degree forgery, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, first-degree identity theft and third-degree unlawful possession of personal identification information, police said.

He was expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
