Man Violently Resists Arrest, Injures Officer In Baldwin: Police

BALDWIN, NY — A Hempstead was arrested for an incident that took place Tuesday night in Baldwin.

Deric Spencer, 27, was spotted by police with heavily tinted windows as he exited a parking lot on Sunrise Highway. As officers conducted a traffic stop, Spencer reached into his waistband and ignored verbal commands by police, authorities said.

Spencer attempted to flee. As officers attempted to place him under arrest he violently resisted, police said.

One officer was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries from the encounter.

An investigation revealed that Spencer was in possession of more than 130 Oxycodone pills and 10 clear bags containing marijuana. Additionally, Spencer's six-year-old daughter was in the vehicle and was released to a family member, authorities said.

Spencer faces counts that include criminal possession of a controlled substance, assault, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on Sept. 6.
