Mt. Sinai South Nassau Scores High Maternity Marks In U.S. News Report

OCEANSIDE, NY. — Mt. Sinai South Nassau extended a streak Wednesday, as the hospital was listed as one of the “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care — High Performing” by U.S. News & World Report.

Mt. Sinai was the only hospital on the south shore to receive the rating, which hospital officials said connotes better patient outcomes for mothers and their newborns. As of Wednesday, there had been 1,867 newborns delivered at the hospital in 2025.

“The U.S. News ranking is a recognition of the labor and delivery teamwork that takes place every day at Mt. Sinai South Nassau,” Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Alan Garely said. “Our physicians, nurses, residents, and support staff are committed to providing the best outcomes for mothers and their newborns.”

Among the key initiatives listed that helped the hospital reach that goal were Mt. Sinai’s labor-support education and birth training, including the utilization of “peanut ball” positioning to encourage labor progress. Also listed among those initiatives was targeted physician education, which hospital officials said helped reduce unnecessary C-sections. That education campaign included individualized reviews of C-section rates for first-time and low-risk patients and a systemwide course on diagnosing labor progress and decision-making to give patients the ability to deliver without surgery.

“We are proud to earn the U.S. News ‘High Performing’ rating for the fourth consecutive year, but what drives us is the confidence and trust that mothers and their families place in us day in and day out,” Mt. Sinai South Nassau’s President, Adhi Sharma said. “We are the go-to hospital for maternity care on the South Shore of Nassau County, and that’s a credit to our exceptional staff.”

The “high performing” rating Mt. Sinai received, officials said, is based on measures that indicate better outcomes for mothers and babies, including reductions in the frequency of C-sections, reduction in the number of unexpected complications faced by newborns, transparency on racial/ethnic disparities and other indicators.
