Nassau Man Arrested For Hit-And-Run That Seriously Injured Pedestrian

BREAKING: Police say the man was driving his car while high when he hit a pedestrian on Sunrise Highway.

A Lawrence man was arrested for a hit-and-run that occurred in Rockville Centre Monday night.

The Rockville Centre Police Department responded to a call for a pedestrian hit by a car at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Park Avenue at 8:15 p.m. Police say the 28-year-old man who was hit had suffered severe injuries to his head and body. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. A witness at the scene gave police a description of the car, which they said had fled east on Sunrise Highway.

A car fitting the description was located shortly after at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue. An investigation was conducted, and police say that Frank Onolfi, 28, of Spring Street, Lawrence, was driving the car while under the influence of drugs.

Police say that a search of Onolfi's car found eight bags of what they believe to be heroin.

Onolfi is charged with second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident, fourth-degree criminal mischief, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and driving while ability impaired by drugs. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
