Nassau Man Sentenced For Drunk Crash That Killed 21-Year-Old

Roy Gomez fled the scene of the crash and hid in a boat, where police found him sleeping hours later.

A West Hempstead man was sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for a 2018 crash that killed a 21-year-old and injured his parents.

Roy Gomez, 39, pleaded guilty on Oct. 19, 2018 to aggravated vehicular homicide; leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, resulting in a death; two counts of third-degree assault and aggravated DWI.

“The Bien-Amie family was simply driving home after getting dinner together,” said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “It is unthinkable that in a split second the selfish, drunk and criminal driving of the defendant stole the life of an innocent 21-year-old man, injured his parents and imposed a life sentence on the shattered Bien-Amie family. Our thoughts and sympathy are with them.”

On March 13, 2018 at around 10:15 p.m., Gomez was driving south on Grand Avenue in Baldwin while very drunk. He drove his 2004 Chevy Trailblazer into the back of the Bien-Amies' Nissan Altima, which was stopped at a red light just blocks from their home. The impact pushed the rear seats into the front seats, trapped all three family members inside and forced the wrecked car down Grand Avenue.

After the crash, Gomez fled the scene and abandoned his car in a parking lot a few blocks away. he then fled on foot and hid in a boat three miles away in Freeport. He was arrested at 3:30 a.m. by members of the Freeport and Nassau County police departments, who found him asleep in the boat.
