Report: South Side High School Among Nation's Top 500

SSHS ranks 127th in U.S., 23rd in New York.

South Side High School has been ranked among the top 500 high schools in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings.

Of the top 500 schools named, SSHS ranks 23rd in New York State and 127th in the country, according to the report.

SSHS made a 71.8 college readiness ranking and earned high marks in Regents, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate exam scores. According to the report, students are 100 percent proficient in both English and math.

About 76 percent of South Side students take IB exams and garnered a 93 percent passing rate. Students take an average of 5.2 IB exams while studying at SSHS, said the report.

Approximately 64 percent of South Side students participated in AP Exams, with 26 percent of those students passing and taking an average of 1.0 tests in their high school careers.

The study looked at more than 19,400 public high schools, and takes into account such factors as participation rate in Advanced Placement courses and exams. In addition to test scores, the list also provides a breakdown of minority enrollment, the percentage of economically disadvantaged students enrolled, and the number of full-time teachers at the school.
