ROCKIVLLE CENTRE, NY — Mayor Francis X. Murray declared a state of emergency in the village today, and announced that all non-essential village buildings would be closing.

The mayor made the announcement Monday afternoon in a letter to residents. In addition, all non-essential village facilities — including Village Hall, the Sandel Senior Center, the John A. Anderson Recreation Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center — are closed for two weeks.

Murray said he was taking the action so that the village could move quickly to respond to the virus, and also that it could be reimbursed for costs associated with it.

Though many buildings will be closed, there will still be staff at essential village services, Murray said, including the police and fire departments, sanitation and utilities. All other employees will be working remotely. The village is also encouraging residents to make electric and water payments online by visiting the village's website.

Murray also announced that the village court will be closed for a month. New summons with updated dates will be sent out soon. All parking violations can be paid online instead of in-person.

In addition, the village is also suspending its parking meter enforcement for two weeks. The goal, Murray said, is that people who need to go out don't have to touch the meters. Illegal parking, such as blocking fire hydrants or corners, is still illegal, and will be ticketed.
