Rockville Centre Student Brings Gun Into High School: Police

Officials at South Side High School received an anonymous tip that the 14-year-old boy had a weapon in his backpack on Friday, police said.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — A teenager was placed under arrest for bringing a gun to South Side High School on Friday, police said.

Police recovered an unregistered and unloaded firearm from inside the 14-year-old's backpack, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Superintendent of Schools Matt Gaven was alerted to an anonymous report that the student brought the weapon into the school, leading to police being contacted.

"[We] will take appropriate and swift disciplinary action," Gaven wrote families in an email.

The boy was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm on school grounds and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was released on an appearance ticket and is due back in Family Court on Feb. 8.
