Rockville Centre Woman Sentenced to Prison For Fatal Crash: DA

The woman was driving drunk with a friend after clubbing in NYC when the crash occurred, the DA says.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - A Rockville Centre woman found guilty of driving drunk and causing the death of her passenger in 2013, was sentenced to prison on Wednesday, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

In August, 24-year-old Asya Ulmer was found guilty of second degree manslaughter, second degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and driving while in an intoxicated condition, according to the DA.

On September 15, 2013, Ulmer and her friend 21-year-old Jennifer Alexis had just come home on the train from clubbing in New York City when they opted to make the three-mile journey home themselves instead of grabbing a nearby cab, officials said.

At 5:50 a.m., Ulmer slammed into a tractor trailer in the right shoulder of North Centre Avenue near Meehan Street, officials said.

The force of the collision, which was captured on surveillance video from a nearby store, sheered the roof off of the car, authorities said.

Alexis was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Nassau County Police. Ulmer was brought to South Nassau Community Hospital for complaints of unspecified pain, cops said.

The jury found Ulmer guilty after less than a day of deliberations at the end of a trial that lasted four weeks.

She was sentenced by Acting Supreme Court Justice Jerald Carter to over 1 year to 4 years in prison on both felony counts and one year on both misdemeanor counts, the DA said.

Ulmer’s license is also revoked for a minimum of six months after her release and she must install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle she owns or drives.

“Asya Ulmer killed her passenger and friend, 21 year old Jennifer Kristen Alexis, by driving recklessly and drunk with a BAC of at least .15,” District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “Jennifer trusted Ulmer to get her home safely but Ulmer betrayed that trust by driving into the back of a parked tractor trailer and then by blaming Jennifer for the crash. No words can ever comfort or ease the pain and suffering that Jennifer Alexis’s family will feel for the rest of their lives.”
