Seniors Lead Cyclones to 9-3 Win Over Roslyn on Senior Day
Seniors Bryan Gerrato, Patrick Finnerty, Mike Firestone and Kevin Waxon combined for six goals.
Playing in their final home game for the South Side boy’s lacrosse team, it was only fitting that the team's seniors led the Cyclones to victory, topping Roslyn 9-3 on Senior Day last Friday.
Seniors Bryan Gerrato, Patrick Finnerty, Mike Firestone and Kevin Waxon combined for six goals, and tallied two assists in front of a packed crowd at Skelos Field. Senior goalie Dominic Moriarty had eight saves, and every senior played some minutes in the 9-3 win.
Head coach Steve DiPietro said he was pleased with his team’s effort in their final home tune-up before the playoffs.

“It was a nice job by the whole team, and great to get this one done on senior day for the kids,” he said. “We were able to get everyone in the game, and it was nice to get everything back on track”
South Side was in command throughout the contest, winning 10 of the 12 face-offs and 21 groundballs, they maintained possession of the ball and ran the offense at their own pace. DiPietro said that they may have caught the Bulldogs at a fortuitous time after they were hit with the injury bug.

“They’ve got some of their key guys hurt,” he said. “They were a lower seed than us, so this is the outcome we expected. They have some dangerous guys, but they’ve been in and out of the lineup all season.”
South Side will look to lock up the third seed in the playoffs Monday, when they travel to Jericho to face the Jayhawks. This will be the first time that DiPietro will coach against his former mentor, Joe Baccarella, who he worked under for eight years.
“This will be the first time going head to head against [Baccarella], who I assisted for awhile, so that should be fun," he said. "If we win, we will have the three-seed, which is where we expected to be when the season started."
Playoffs start on May 19 at 4:30 p.m.
