St. Mark's Nursery School in Rockville Centre Forced Out of Its Home
Nursery School Asked to Vacate Premises After Almost 50 Years at St. Mark's Church

After making its home at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for almost 50 years, the Director of St. Mark’s Nursery School received a certified letter from the Church Council and the Board of Trustees forcing the school to vacate the campus by June 30, 2015. The school board had already started registration for the Fall when they received the news on January 28th, 2015.
“While the vacate order came unexpectedly, we are forging ahead with a plan to secure the future of our nursery school,” said Shirley Perri, Educational Director at St. Mark’s Nursery. “We fully intend to be operational in September. We have retained legal counsel and alongside the full support of the Governing Board and staff all of our options are being evaluated, including relocation.”

St. Mark’s Nursery School was designed as a non-sectarian, non-discriminatory program for three-and four-year old children. It was chartered as an independent institution residing within the walls of the church. The school has been committed to educating Rockville Centre and its surrounding communities for almost 50 years and plans to continue with that mission. The cooperative is made up of families who have built the school into the successful and reputable institution that it is today, despite facing headwinds from the church for the last several years.
The officers and the board of the Nursery School will convene a Town Hall meeting to update the community on these events and to solicit comments and suggestions. All are welcome to attend.
