Tax Freedom Day - Long Island Still Handcuffed

New York State, taxation

“May 11 represents ‘Tax Freedom Day’ in New York State, which means that our residents have officially earned enough money to pay for their 2017 tax bill. With Tax Freedom Day in New York coming halfway through the year and more than two weeks later than most of the country (April 23), it is clear that this state – Long Island in particular – is taxed far too high. The non-partisan Tax Foundation has found that New York has had the highest state and local taxes for seven consecutive years.

“The government is taxing residents right out of Nassau County, across the border and into neighboring states. Long Island residents already suffer some of the highest property taxes in the nation. In fact, according to Wallethub, when combining property tax, individual income tax, total sales tax and ad excise tax, New Yorkers bare the highest tax burden anywhere in the nation. The state’s overtaxing of our paychecks is adding insult to injury. Serious tax reform is needed if we are to turn this state around and end the mass exodus that we have seen in recent years.”
