The Town of Hempstead is helping Haiti by setting up collection boxes for urgent items.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — With the death toll approaching 2,000, Haiti is devastated again by an earthquake. The 7.2 magnitude quake has impacted more than 1 million people and at least 540,000 children, who have no access to clean water or nutrition, UNICEF said on its website.

The Town of Hempstead is holding a month-long collection drive for the people of Haiti.

They are setting up collection boxes at Hempstead Town Hall and other municipal buildings.

Among the items being sought include bottled water, non-perishable food, baby wipes and diapers. People can also drop off first aid kits, garbage bags, paper towels, work gloves and safety glasses, the town said in a news release.

The collection boxes will be in place until September 15. Residents can also find them at:

• Old Town Hall (350 Front Street, Hempstead)
• The Hempstead Town of Receiver of Taxes office (200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead)
• Echo Park (399 Nassau Boulevard, West Hempstead)

To make a monetary donation, the town suggests giving to the Haitian Relief Effort through charities:
