Town Of Hempstead Opens Cooling Centers, Extends Beach Hours
It was done to comfort residents with Monday's heat index topping 100 degrees.
HEMPSTEAD, NY — With the heat back on, the Town of Hempstead is opening cooling centers for residents on Monday.
It's expected to feel at least 100 degrees outside, so Supervisor Don Clavin announced four locations to stay cool inside. Cooling centers are open until 4 p.m.
- Baldwin Senior Center, 1810 N. Grand Avenue
- Green Acres Senior Center, 400 Flower Road, Valley Stream
- Levittown Senior Center, 555 N. Newbridge Road
- Uniondale-Merrick Senior Center, 750 Jerusalem Avenue, Uniondale
Town beaches and pools are having extended hours on Monday. Beaches stay open until 7 p.m., while pools will remain open until 8 p.m.

"Labor Day and the fall season are around the corner, but summer is not finished just yet. We urge residents to be prepared for this incoming heat, which can be hazardous to one’s health," Clavin said.
With temperatures forecasted to be the 70s for the rest of the week, the town is not expected to add hours or cooling centers on other days.
