BALDWIN, NY — Town of Hempstead residents can dispose of their Christmas trees and help the environment at the same time.

The 3rd annual Mulchfest program allows trees and cardboard boxes to be dropped off at Baldwin Park. In exchange for the holiday remnant, residents will receive a bag of mulch for gardening.

Beyond that, Supervisor Don Clavin said the leftover trees will be fed to Nigerian Dwarf goats who live at Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.

"The commencement of this program took place three years ago and its success has inspired us to bring Mulchfest back to the Town of Hempstead for a fun and organic way to repurpose Christmas trees! Even better, this year the goats are even more excited than we are!”

Mulchfest is Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. If you can't attend on those dates, residents can also bring their trees from Jan. 3-6 between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
