Tractor Trailer Driver Turns Self In After Overpass Crash: Police

Jose De La Rosa-Martinez was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving, state police said.

LAKEVIEW, NY — A tractor-trailer slammed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway early Wednesday, fire officials said.

The 2009 Freightliner, was driven by Jose De La Rosa-Martinez, 37 of the Bronx, state police said.

It happened just before 4 a.m. when the vehicle became stuck under the overpass on the westbound lanes near exit 18 for Eagle Avenue. Traffic remained shut at exit 19 (Peninsula Boulevard) for several hours, the state police said.

A 2007 Acura RDX, driven by Kereen Wiggins, 53 of Valley Stream, hit the back of the trailer. She was taken to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A passenger from that vehicle was transported to a separate hospital. Details on that person's condition were not immediately known.

was also traveling westbound on the Southern State Parkway when it struck the back of the trailer.

De La Rosa-Martinez fled the scene after the tractor was separated from the trailer. He later turned himself in to the State Police in East Meadow, authorities said.

He is being charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Another vehicle crashed into the trailer causing injuries and that person was taken to a hospital, state police said.

Lakeview and the South Hempstead Fire Department responded to the early morning incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and the state police is asking anyone who witnessed, or has information about, the crash to call 631-756-3300.
