HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Flash flooding from heavy rain caused travel problems across the Hudson Valley on Sunday, with rail delays, road closures and airport disruption reported in communities along the Interstate 95 corridor.
First responders were called on to rescue stranded motorist in Rye and Port Chester.
In southern Westchester residents were urged not to leave their homes unless ordered to evacuate. In Sound Shore communities, emergency alerts were issued on mobile device in the area warning of imminent and continuing danger.
The National Weather Service said the hardest-hit areas appeared to include a swath of coastal Connecticut along Interstate 95, as well as northern New Jersey and parts Westchester County. Flash flood warnings were in effect across the region for much of Sunday morning, according to the weather service, as rain fell at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour in some places.
The storm affected rail service in the Sound Shore, Metro-North and Amtrak both reported delays and cancellations on their New Haven Line, Hudson Line and Northeast Regional routes due to flooding.
