Police Chase BMW Connected To Post Office Mail Box Theft

RYE, NY — An early morning mailbox theft led to a brief car chase, according to police.

On Sept. 10, at approximately 6 a.m., a City of Rye Police Department officer on patrol saw a suspected mail theft from a mailbox in front of the U.S. Post Office on Purdy Ave. The officer witnessed a suspect run from the mailbox, cross the street, and enter a BMW X7.

The officer attempted to pull over the BMW, but the driver sped away, according to police. A pursuit was initiated but then terminated due to the suspect's reckless driving, and treacherous road conditions, cops said.

"The City of Rye Police Department reminds residents to take precautions when mailing checks or other sensitive items," police said in a message to the community. "Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to bring outgoing mail directly inside the post office rather than leaving it in an exterior collection box. Residents who observe suspicious activity around mailboxes or post offices are encouraged to contact the Police Department. If you see something, say something."
