FARMINGVILLE, NY — Brookhaven officials are asking residents, business owners, and stakeholders to take part in a 10-minute online survey and interactive mapping activity that will help shape the future of the town, as part of its update to a 30-year-old Comprehensive Land-Use Plan.
Between April 22 and May 14, officials hosted a series of in-person public open house events in each of the six Council Districts to gather community input and discuss local challenges and opportunities.
Residents, who were unable to attend those meetings, are encouraged to participate by visiting the project website to submit comments and by completing the online survey and interactive mapping activity.
The town has finished a number of focused studies examining the needs, growth, and character of its many communities, and the planning effort brings those studies together into one coordinated framework that looks at both town-wide conditions and priorities, as well as local needs within each of Brookhaven’s six council districts, officials said.
As part of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan process, the survey is designed to gather public input on the issues and opportunities facing Brookhaven today, what community members value most about where they live, and what they would like to see in the years ahead, according to officials.
In addition to the survey, the project website features an interactive online map where community members can
drop a pin and share their thoughts about the places they gather in their community, officials said.
Residents can highlight locations that are important to them, places where they like to spend time or visit on a regular basis, or areas they feel could benefit from improvements, according to officials.
The mapping will help better understand how residents live, work, play, and spend their time across the town, officials said.
Supervisor Dan Panico called it "an opportunity for everyone who lives, works, owns a business, or has a stake in Brookhaven’s future to make their voice heard."
“The more input we receive, the stronger and more
reflective our Comprehensive Plan will be of the people, neighborhoods, and values that make our Town such a
diverse and special place," he added.
