Suffolk Man Used Bay Identity To Open Bank Account, Rent A Car: Police

HOLTSVILLE, NY — A Holtsville man stole a man’s identity to open a bank account and rent cars, Suffolk police said.

Officers were contacted on May 6 by a Bay Shore man, who previously lost his wallet and reported a bank account had been opened, and vehicles had been rented in his name without his authorization, according to police.

Following an investigation by the Financial Crimes Unit, detectives determined Justin Kopperl used the victim’s personal information to open a bank account and deposit counterfeit checks into it, police said.

Detectives found Kopperl, in addition to using the account to deposit counterfeit checks and obtain a rental car, used the bank account to transfer money via Cash App, according to police.

As a result, the account shows a negative balance of $5,000.

Kopperl was charged with first-and second-degree identity theft 1st Degree, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

He will be held overnight at the 6th Precinct in Selden, and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in
Central Islip on July 21.
