Applied Computer Technologies: Long Island's Leading Provider of RFID

A closer look at the Holtsville-based company.

It sometimes can take many years for businesses using complex technologies to grow and thrive. But the partners at Applied Computer Technologies, LLC (ACT) in Holtsville turned their company into Long Island’s leading provider for an inventory management system called radio frequency identification, or RFID, after working with the technology only three years.

Simply put, RFID is a tracking device that allows business and warehouse owners alike to trace assets whenever they move, said Seth Schneider, one of ACT’s three partners.

“It’s all a matter of keeping control of where your moving parts are,” said Rick Kumar, a second partner.

This technology allows for the exact location of an item to be known at any given time, no matter where the item is. Schneider said RFID is more beneficial than barcoding because items are traced on a computer through a tag integrated into an item rather than by being manually scanned.

RFID is used by many different businesses ranging from museums and libraries to law firms and industrial factories. The technology provides these businesses with many benefits because the exact locations of items are always known, so it improves productivity and ultimately costs less money for businesses to operate. With its tracking system, RFID also helps prevent shrinkage and theft.

And if an item needs to be found but is hoarded together with many others, an individual can use a special RFID handheld gun to scan the area and find it.

Formally known as Prominent IT Solutions (IT is an abbreviation for information technology), ACT started as a division of Schneider Engineering in 1999. ACT began working with RFID about three years ago, “once prices came down and reliability went up,” said Scott Schneider, another partner.

Schneider said that although the business is still small, family-run ACT serves about 150 clients throughout 35 different private and municipal industries in the tri-state area.

Although ACT may now be known for its success with RFID, it offers other IT solutions. According to a handout provided by the company, it provides network solution services such as data backup and cloud computing; technical solution services such as PC and MAC support and data entry and scanning; and custom solution services such as database design, CRM software and video conferencing.

ACT is located in Waverly Plaza on Waverly Ave., across from Sequoya Middle School. For more information on the company, visit their website.
