Brookhaven Highway Supe Recalls 'Harrowing' Trip, 'Almost Zero Visibility' To Remove Downed Tree During Storm
"The pre-dawn hours were nothing less than treacherous." - Dan Losquadro
MILLER PLACE, NY — In keeping with traditional big storm callouts for independent contractors, the blizzard Sunday into Monday saw another 30 contractors sign up to help the Town of Brookhaven in its snow mitigation and clean-up efforts.
And, they were just time for what Superintendent Dan Losquadro called it the worst he has seen in a long time within his 13 years on the job.
"The pre-dawn hours were nothing less than treacherous," said Losquadro, who worked overnight until about 10 a.m.

He recalled how he also got out of his vehicle at one point to help a Suffolk County worker, whose truck had ended up in a ditch, by placing flares at the side of William Floyd Parkway in Mastic.
At one point, it was unnerving driving from Blue Point, along Nicholls Road, for a downed tree in Miller Place.

"That trip from Blue Point to Miller Place was harrowing," he said. "It was almost zero visibility."
For the road conditions, he gives"much credit to the plow operators at every level."
It's the second bug storm in a month, but the increase in snow events doesn't have Losquadro concerned.
"I am confident that even a storm as big as this will not exhaust the snow budget," he said.
