Horse Escapes Pen, Runs Along Sunrise Highway (WATCH)

Oppie, a 30-year-old horse, escaped his enclosure Monday morning and was seen running on Sunrise Highway.

BROOKHAVEN, NY — A horse escaped from a Brookhaven farm during the Monday morning rush-hour commute and video showed the animal running free on Sunrise Highway. Suffolk County police began receiving reports of a horse on the lam in the westbound lanes of the highway around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The animal had escaped from Rockaby Farms, near Yaphank Avenue and Horseblock Road, after a tree fell and damaged its enclosure, police said. Multiple 911 callers reported seeing the brown horse, a 30-year-old thoroughbred named Oppie, running between exits 57 and 56.

The horse’s caretaker flagged down a highway patrol officer, who hopped into a vehicle to find the animal. He found the horse in the westbound median and a Suffolk County deputy sheriff who was on the eastbound side grabbed the horse within minutes of the first 911 calls.
