Fourth Annual “Safety Town” Bicycle Rodeo

Supervisor Mark Lesko has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will present the Fourth Annual Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, April 28. The event will be held at Brookhaven’s Safety Town, located at the Holtsville Ecology Site on Buckley Road from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Free helmets for children four years old and up will be provided while supplies last. All participants must bring their own bike. The Town will sponsor three more Bicycle Rodeos this year in June, July and August with specific dates to be announced soon.

“It’s important that children are taught bicycle safety skills as soon as they can ride a bike. The Bicycle Rodeo is a great way for them to learn and it’s also a lot of fun. I encourage all residents with young children to attend,” said Supervisor Mark Lesko.

The Bicycle Rodeo provides an opportunity for children to become better bicyclists and avoid typical accidents. Participants of all ages will practice and demonstrate their bicycle handling skills in a fun, noncompetitive atmosphere. Bicycle safety skills will be properly demonstrated and discussed. After the skills demonstration/discussion, each participant will be allowed to practice before being tested on their skills. An evaluator will provide immediate feedback to the participant in a positive manner. If a child has difficulty with a particular lesson, he or she has the chance to keep practicing. The Town will also offer a free bicycle safety inspection for all participants.
