Supernovae are spectacular explosions that signal violent stellar deaths. They are also responsible for producing the majority of the elements found on Earth, and for giving birth to objects such as pulsars and black holes. Dr. Alan Calder, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, will discuss the classification and the basic science involved in these extraordinary events.
