Fire Sweeps Through Holbrook Home: Cat Rescued, 2nd Missing

Flames swept through a Holbrook home overnight. Fire officials said the homeowner made it out, but a cat is missing.

HOLBROOK, NY — A fire swept through a Holbrook home on Knickerbocker Avenue overnight and one cat remains missing. The blaze ignited in the back exterior of the home around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, burning the vinyl siding and spreading to the attic, Ronkonkoma Fire Department First Assistant Chief Eric Cook told Patch on Sunday.

Firefighters battled the inferno for about an hour and half, he said. The homeowner who was in bed at the time was able to escape with no injuries.

A Farmingville firefighter rescued a cat and a second cat was able to make it out of the home on its own. A third cat was not found in the home and remains missing.

The house sustained major damage. Photos showed thick flames and smoke shooting out of the roof of the home into the night sky with firefighters standing underneath.

"It's still intact but it's untenable at the moment," Cook said. "Only the attic was affected with fire but the rest was water damaged."
