Sachem Elementary Teacher Wins $1K Macy's Makeover

Carol Karson, a teacher at Hiawatha Elementary School, was presented with a $1,000 gift card from Macy's after a nomination from students.

HOLBROOK, NY — A Hiawatha Elementary School teacher got a little more than an apple on her desk this week, learning she won the Macy's Long Island Teachers Contest.

Carol Karson on Tuesday received a $1,000 gift card and a personal shopping experience from Macy's after she was nominated by students and parents. Over 130 Suffolk County elementary school teachers and more than 100 student- and parent-written essays recommended teachers for the award, according to a news release.

Karson teaches classes kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the Sachem Center School District website. Her shopping excursion took place in Macy's Roosevelt Field store in East Garden City.

Earlier this year, Macy's rewarded the school with a $500 check and gave a $2,000 check to the Suffolk County Region PTA.

An email message left with Karson wasn't immediately returned.
