HOLTSVILLE, NY — Island 16: Cinema de Lux in Holtsville, one of the only remaining movie theaters in eastern Long Island, was shuttered Wednesday morning after Brookhaven Town officials found "a defective fire detection system that must be repaired," town spokesman Drew Scott said.

The theater's manager declined to comment when reached on Thursday afternoon.

The theater has 16 screens, including 3-D, as well as Chatters Bar and Grill, two concession areas, and an arcade.

The town's Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman has determined the theater will not be able to open until the system is repaired, according to Scott.

"Fire detection systems in large public buildings are essential to public safety," Scott said. "Also, many of the exterior exit doors in the theater were found to be blocked by snowbanks and had to be cleared to be usable."
