Officer Fires Shots Into Vehicle After Driver Backs Into Police Car in Medford

No one was struck by bullets, but one suspect and two officers were hospitalized following incident.

MEDFORD, NY- Three people, including two Suffolk County Police officers, were hospitalized Wednesday morning following a traffic stop in Medford in which an officer fired shots into a vehicle that had rammed into a police car, police said.

According to police, Suffolk County Police Fifth Precinct officers were following up on a larceny complaint when they attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by three people on Route 112 near Peconic Avenue around 1 a.m.

The officer reportedly had the driver’s license in hand when the driver backed up into the police car and then fled the scene.

An officer fired three shots at the suspects’ vehicle, police said. No one was struck by the bullets, but one passenger was injured by glass fragments, police said.

Officers located two of the suspects on Flores Lane in Middle Island and arrested the driver of the vehicle for DWI, police said. Police are still searching for the third suspect.

The two officers and one suspect were hospitalized. No serious injuries were reported.
