The 70-year-old woman was asleep in her basement when her home went up in flames. Three heroes came to the rescue.

A Suffolk County Police sergeant, police officer and an off-duty firefighter saved an elderly woman from a house fire in Holbrook Tuesday.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Precinct officers responded to 20 Dover Court following the report of a house fire at the location at approximately 2:10 p.m. Upon arrival, Sergeant Charles Kelleher, Police Officer Krystin Reinhart along with Brendan Smith, an off-duty member of the Holtsville Fire Department, used an axe to enter the home and found 70-year-old Victoria Venturing asleep in the basement.

Venturing was removed from the home and refused medical attention at the scene. The fire was extinguished by members of the Holbrook, Holtsville and North Patchogue fire departments. Arson Section detectives will investigate to determine the cause of the fire.
