Pedestrian Struck By 2 Cars In Suffolk Dies

The first driver tried to avoid him as he ran across North Ocean Avenue, Suffolk police said.

FARMINGVILLE, NY - A Port Jefferson Station man died Sunday night after he was struck by two cars in Farmingville, Suffolk police said.

A 41-year-old Mount Sinai man was driving a 2022 Mercedes-Benz northbound on North Ocean Avenue at Granny Road when he swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting Roland Degroff at 7:40 p.m., according to police.

Degroff had been running east across the roadway at the intersection against the direction of traffic control devices, police said.

The Mercedes struck Degroff, who was then struck again by a 2021 Hyundai Sonata being operated by a 44-year-old Coram man, according to police.

Degroff, 58, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue and pronounced dead a short time later.

Neither the Mount Sinai nor the Coram man, as well as two passengers in the Mercedes-Benz, were injured in the crash.

The vehicles were both impounded for safety checks, police said.
