Police: Pair Broke Into Restaurants, Bank to Steal ATM Cash

The Lake Ronkonkoma McDonald's was among the places hit, police say.

Two men have been arrested in a series of burglaries that have occurred in East Farmingdale, Lake Ronkonkoma, Brentwood, North Patchogue and East Islip over the past several months, police said.

Salvatore Maiolo, 64, of Long Beach, and Frank DeJohn, 44, of Yonkers, were arrested Monday morning after they broke into an East Islip Applebee’s, police said.

The men are accused of breaking into three restaurants and a bank since March. Once inside the businesses, they damaged ATM machines in order to steal cash, police said.

They also cut open an exterior ATM at a bank in North Patchogue, police said.

· March 10 - Citibank, 2261 Broadhollow Road, East Farmingdale

· July 8 - McDonald’s, 174 Portion Road, Lake Ronkonkoma

· July 28 - Applebee’s, 300 Motor Parkway, Brentwood

· Aug. 15- Chase Bank, 499-84 Sunrise Highway, North Patchogue

· Aug. 24- Applebee’s, 2550 East Sunrise Service Road, East Islip

According to police, after a thorough investigation by Pattern Crime Unit detectives, Maiolo was identified as one of the people responsible for the burglaries and surveillance was initiated.

On Monday morning, detectives observed Maiolo and DeJohn break into the East Islip Applebee’s, police said. The men then attempted to break into the ATM located inside the restaurant, police said. They were arrested at about 5:40 a.m.

Maiolo is charged with four counts of burglary, one count of third degree attempted grand larceny, one count of possession of burglar’s tools, one count of unlawful possession of radio devices and resisting arrest.

DeJohn is charged with one count of burglary, one count of possession of burglar’s tools and one count of unlawful possession of radio devices.

Both men will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.
