Police ID Bicyclist Seriously Hurt in Alleged DWI Crash

The crash occurred in Islandia Thursday night, police say.

UPDATE 8 a.m. Sunday- The bicyclist has been identified as Gregory Milau, 26, of Ronkonkoma, police said.

A Ronkonkoma man is charged with DWI after he struck a bicyclist with his SUV in Islandia Thursday night, police said.

According to police, 54-year-old Glenn Klimpel was driving a 2008 Honda CRV south in the left lane of Veterans Memorial Highway when his vehicle struck a bicyclist who was crossing against a steady red signal light from Suffolk Avenue onto Veterans Memorial Highway at 7:15 p.m.

The bicyclist was transported via Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family, police said.

Klimpel was charged with DWI and was held overnight at the Third Precinct. He will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
