2. Brookhaven Highway Department offering free child safety seat checks. The first event will be held be Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Miller Place Fire Department, 220 Miller Place-Yaphank Road in Miller Place.; the second will be Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Setauket Fire Department, Station 2, 9 Arrowhead Lane in East Setauket. Professionals will be on hand to examine the child safety seats. "In passenger cars, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers," said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro.
