Sachem Celebrates Festival of Trees and Lights

Trees were decorated by various school clubs and placed in the gym for people to vote on.

From The Sachem Schools: Sachem celebrated one if its most popular events of the year on the weekend of December 9-10 when the Festival of Trees and Lights (FOTAL) was held at Sachem High School North.

What serves as one of the largest toy drives in the Sachem community also is a way for the community to gather and share the holiday spirit.

The toy drive this year netted thousands of items that will be distributed to students across Sachem. With the help of social workers in the buildings, children are identified who may need not get the full experience of opening gifts for the holidays. More than 150 students receive toys they put on their holiday wish list.

“Over the past few months, the Sachem community has been raising money through fundraisers and donations to donate to our toy drive, which gives back to those in the community during the holiday season,” said Caitlyn Humann, senior class president. “It’s a great community event.”

Added Lauren Breuer, junior class president: “Students work with the staff very closely to see what the kids in schools want for Christmas, who aren’t privileged. We work together to make their Christmas dreams come true.”

FOTAL also packed craft vendors from the area into the gym, and Santa Claus also there to take photos. Trees were decorated by various school clubs and placed in the gym for people to vote on. The winners are shipped to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital each year for others to enjoy.

“The Festival of Trees and Lights is a great way to bring together our community,” said freshman Molly Pierce. “We bring in vendors from all over who get to share their holiday crafts and foods with families and bring them holiday joy.”
