🌱 Sachem Daily: Avian Flu Found In Birds On LI + COVID-19 Drop

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sachem.

Hello, neighbors! Andrew Tessler here with your Sunday issue of the Sachem Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 32 low: 31.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Sachem:

  1. Avian Flu found in backyard flock of birds in Suffolk County. A news release issued Saturday did not specify the location in the county or the breed of the birds. "As part of existing avian influenza response plans, federal and state partners are working jointly on additional surveillance and testing in areas around the affected flock," the statement continued. "The United States has the strongest AI surveillance program in the world, and USDA is working with its partners to actively look for the disease in commercial poultry operations, live bird markets, and in migratory wild bird populations." (Sachem Patch)
  2. The Mental Health Subcommittee of the Community Mental Hygiene Advisory Board is holding a Zoom meeting March 2. The next Zoom meeting of the Substance Use Disorders Subcommittee is scheduled for March 2. With mental health and substance abuse issues at an all-time high, now is the time to get involved, have your voice heard and make changes. You can call the MH Division at 631-853-8500, to get the numbers to participate in the Zoom calls. (Press Release Desk)
  3. COVID-19 cases at a level not seen in months. It's been a while since we have updated you in the newsletter on COVID-19 cases, and that's good news. The numbers continue to decline, with only 227 people testing positive in the latest press release, which makes our 7-day positivity rate average under 3 percent. As always, you can get all COVID-19 statistics in Suffolk County's daily press release. (Press Release Desk)

From my notebook:

  • SachemMom, Neighbor: "I don't understand how an outside Cater (Yenis Caterings) can rent out Basement of American Legion Hall in Lake Ronkonkoma & throw huge catered events & parties as if it's a Catering Hall and not a basement in Legion Hall in a Residential area." (Patch)
