🌱 Sachem Daily: Mask Mandate Lifted + Sachem NYSSMA Selections
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sachem.
Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Andrew Tessler, your host of the Sachem Daily.
First, today's weather:
Partly sunny and breezy. High: 49 low: 30.
Here are the top 3 stories today in Sachem:
- Gov Hochul lifts indoor mask mandate, effective Thursday. New York State governor Kathy Hochul has announced she is lifting the mask mandate that has now been in effect for months. "Given the declining cases, given the declining hospitalizations, that is why we feel comfortable to lift this, in effect tomorrow," Hochul said. The mandate will remain in effect in schools and be reevaluated the first week of March. (Patch)
- Gov. Hochul apartment plan 'a threat to home rule' lawmakers say. Brookhaven town officials are up in arms with Gov Hochul's new apartment plan. They appealed again on Wednesday, this time sending a letter saying she removes the plan from her state budget. Her plan would allow accessory apartments in residential areas that are normally zoned for single-family homes. "We see this as a threat to home rule and local control of land use, which will also significantly impact our environment, emergency services, traffic, school districts, and quality-of-life," wrote Town Supervisor Ed Romaine in the letter that was also signed by six other members of the town council. (Sachem Patch)
- Sachem students participate in NYSSMA All-State Conference. Sachem schools sent 11 students to this year's NYSSMA All-State Conference. Two of the students were selected to participate in this year's All-National Honor Ensembles. Congratulations to all the students for your hard work and talent! (Press Release Desk)

- Sachem Schools: Fifth grade students at Waverly Avenue Elementary School recently began a research project led by library media specialist Louann Cronin in which they will learn the intricacies of research and gathering important information using the variety of tools available to them. As the beginning step to their project, students learned about outlines and began filling them out to organize the information they would need for their specific topics.(Facebook)
