Rise and shine, Sachem! Let's get this day started. These are the most important things happening today in town.
First, today's weather:
A snow shower this afternoon. High: 40 low: 18.
Here are the top stories in Sachem today:
- Sachem Sports Club Cheerleaders earn 2nd at Nationals. Congratulations are in order for Sachem Cheerleading after the REC 10-year-old and Sachem Junior Rec 12 both took second place overall at the UCA National Cheerleading Championships last week. It was both teams first time competing at a national level. "They began this memorable season in July when their coaches and coordinator decided to take a leap of faith during the pandemic. They had no idea if there would be a season on Long Island and the thought of taking yet another year off while not getting to compete for the second year in a row was a devastating blow," coach Jamie D'Andrea told Patch.(Sachem Patch)
- First ever Breeze Airways flight takes off Friday from Islip to SC. The first ever Breeze Airways flight took off from MacArthur Airport to Charleston at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The airline will be offering affordable direct connections between Long Island and Charleston, along with Norfolk VA. Flights in February start as low as $90. (Sachem Patch)
- After uproar from local and state politicians, Hochul removes affordable housing plan from budget. Town of Brookhaven officials were not happy with affordable housing plans that were added to the state's budget. The plans would require local governments to allow accessory dwelling units in residential areas that were normally zoned for single-family usage. The outcry was by Hochul as she dropped the plans from the budget. She said: "I have heard real concerns about the proposed approach on accessory dwelling units and transit-oriented development, and I understand that my colleagues in the State Senate believe a different set of tools is needed, even if they agree with the goal of supporting the growth of this kind of housing. So, I am submitting a 30-day amendment to my budget legislation that removes requirements on localities in order to facilitate a conversation about how we build consensus around solutions." (Patch)
