Here are the top stories in Sachem today:

  1. Sachem-area unemployment rate improves: new update. COVID-19 affected every aspect of our daily lives. From home life, work life to social life, it has put a damper on us the past two years. The job market was hit especially hard, but the good news is that the Sachem area unemployment rate has improved. The Suffolk County unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in November, down from 4 percent in October. That reflected some improvement from November 2020, when the unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent.   2. 'Karate Kid' and 'Cobra Kai' star Ralph Macchio makes Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. Long Island legend Ralph Macchio has made the Suffolk Sports Hall Of Fame. The famous "Karate Kid" actor from the 1980s, who has reappeared in his role as Danny LaRusso for Netflix's ongoing popular "Cobra Kai" sequel series, is a special recognition inductee (not an official athlete), being recognized for his positive influence on the martial arts.   3. Suffolk County Government: Coronavirus case update for January 13. As COVID-19 cases start to decline, make sure you stay updated on numbers in our area with Suffolk County Government's updates on their website. The good news is hospitalizations are plateauing, and the positivity rate has gone down nearly 10%. You can see vaccination rates, positive cases, deaths, and much more on the website.
