Here are the top 3 stories in Sachem today:

  1. Suffolk County Community College: RTV student Laura Adams nominated for prestigious Vanguard Award. Nesconset mother of two Laura Adams has been nominated for the Vanguard Award. Only nine students are nominated for this award throughout the state. The Vanguard Student Recognition Award acknowledges outstanding students who are enrolled in career and technical education programs that prepare them for professions that are not traditional for their gender. "The Vanguard Award not only recognizes outstanding students," said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, "but also the work being done at Suffolk to support non-traditional students pursuing careers in fields that are open to talent that represents every part of our diverse student body and community. Congratulations to Laura and her professors."(Press Release Desk)
  2. ICYMI: New Bureau to Examine Gangs and gun violence. As gun and gang violence continues to be on the rise on Long Island, Suffolk County has formed a new bureau to tackle the issue. The Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau will "combat gun violence and criminal activity perpetrated by gangs and criminal organizations operating in Suffolk," DA Tierney's office said. It will use multiple investigative strategies, including sophisticated crime scene and data analysis "to build successful conspiracy and enterprise corruption cases against offenders" to "incapacitate and dismantle" the "violent enterprises," Tierney's office stated in a news release. 3. Potential snow in the forecast next weekend. We are monitoring potential snow accumulation Friday into Saturday and will keep you updated throughout the week on any developments. Storms are known to change directions quickly, and this could be a couple inches or more accumulation.
