A look at the business scene from around the Sachem community.

Business news this week runs the gamut from groundbreaking new products to wildlife refuge projects. Here's a look at what's happened lately:

Ultravolt Extends EFL Series Product Line: UltraVolt Inc., manufacturer of DC-to-DC high-voltage power supplies, has announced the growth of its EFL Series of enhanced floating "hot-deck" isolated power supplies. The EFL Series products previously offered 15kV of isolation, but with the product line now boasts 30 kV of isolation. Ultravolt's EFL Series is typically used for applications such as focused ion beam (FIB) tools and medical patient diagnostic/patient treatment equipment, with uses such as stacking/floating high-voltage power supplies and floating LVPS for powering fiber optic links.

T.G. Nickel & Associates the General Contractor for Wildlife Refuge Project: The Ronkonkoma-based contracting company T.G. Nickel & Associates served as the general contractor for the new Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex Visitor Center and Headquarters, according to Presswire. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dedicated the center this week, which is located at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley and spans 13,000 square feet.

The building is LEED certified, funded with nearly $9.8 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and supported 120 jobs over a period of 18 months. The center will be home to interactive exhibits, an environmental classroom with a wet lab and a nature store. The location's grand opening is set for May 2012, but service staff is expected to move in by early December of this year.

CVD Announces Record Results: This week, CVD Equipment Corporation of Ronkonkoma announced record revenue and income for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2011, according to Business Wire. The company, a provider of custom chemical vapor deposition systems, had a three-month revenue of $8,844,000, outdoing its previous quarter revenue by 18% and by 119% its revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2010.

CVD's nine-month revenue for this quarter came in at $22,558,000, exceeding its revenue for the same period for the previous year by 103%. The company also achieved record net income of $1,239,000 and $2,704,000 for the three- and nine-month periods, respectively, and received $31,024,000 in new orders during the nine months ended September 30, 2011. Backlog was at $18,410,000 as of this same time.
