Sachem School Budget, Trustee Election Tuesday

Here's what you need to know before heading to the polls tomorrow.

Residents in the Sachem School District will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots for a proposed school budget and to elect school board trustees.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at all district elementary schools.

The Sachem Board of Education is proposing a $306.4 million budget for the 2016-17 school year. That represents a 2.7 percent spending increase over the current year and it comes with a 0.76 percent hike in the school tax levy. The school tax increase for the average homeowner would be $40, but district officials say homeowners will receive $130 rebate checks because the budget is within the state's tax cap.
