Suffolk Advises Closing 20 Brookhaven Beaches To Swimming

The beaches, including Ronkonkoma, were part of 63 county-wide affected by high bacteria, Department of Health officials said.

RONKONKOMA, NY — The Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued a health advisory, cautioning against swimming at 20 beaches throughout Brookhaven Town, as well as Ronkonkoma Beach in Islip, due to heavy rainfall and the high levels of bacteria resulting from water runoff, officials said.

The department recommended that “bathing and other water contact be suspended” in 63 affected areas county-wide “until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles,” which is at least 24 hours after the cessation of rainfall, according to a news release. The advisory will be lifted Tuesday at 9 a.m., officials said, adding that could be precluded if water sampling reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24 hours.
The beaches are as follows:

  • Bayberry Cove Beach - Setauket-East Setauket
  • Bayview Beach - Setauket-East Setauket
  • Beech Road Beach - Rocky Point
  • Broadway Beach - Rocky Point
  • Corey Beach - Blue Point
  • Friendship Beach - Rocky Point
  • Miller Place Park Beach - Miller Place
  • Grantland Beach - Setauket-East Setauket
  • Indian Field Beach - Setauket-East Setauket
  • Little Bay Beach - Setauket-East Setauket
  • Scotts Beach - Sound Beach
  • Shoreham Beach - East Shoreham
  • Shoreham Shore Club Beach - East Shoreham
  • Shoreham Village Beach - Shoreham
  • Sound Beach POA East - Sound Beach
  • Sound Beach POA West - Sound Beach
  • Soundview Beach - Old Field
  • Stony Brook Beach - Stony Brook
  • Terraces on the Sound - Rocky Point
  • Tides Beach - Rocky Point

Brookhaven Town spokesman Kevin Molloy said that Corey Beach is the only beach operated by the town that is affected because Shoreham and Stony Brook are not open during weekdays.
In addition to the advisory, health officials closed East Islip Beach to swimmers. It will reopen when bacteria subsides to acceptable levels.
