Waverly Students Bring Storybook Characters To Life

Fictional characters fueled a recent activity at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as fifth grade students in Susan Kinsey’s art class utilized egg cartons to create three-dimensional art.

For the project, students researched storybook characters on their Chromebooks and printed out images as a visual reference to help create their sculptures. The students sketched out their ideas to scale to match the same size cardboard they would be using.

They then used papier-mâché to build up the snouts and glued on the egg cartons to the cardboard. As part of the project students learned to mix acrylic paint to match the colors of their characters. The challenge of the project was to take a two-dimensional image and translate it into three-dimensional sculpture.
