SAYVILLE, NY — Sayville School District voters approved the district’s proposed $107,721,878 budget for the 2026-27 school year Tuesday, along with the library budget, Historical Society funding and a $1.1 million capital reserve proposition.
The school budget passed 1,226-465.
District officials said the approved spending plan maintains all current student programs and staffing levels while supporting long-term fiscal stability. The budget represented a $2,045,085 increase over the current year’s adopted budget.
The approved tax levy increases from approximately $67.9 million to $69.795 million. According to district projections, the estimated homestead tax rate will rise from 21.77 to 22.37 per $100 of assessed value, amounting to an estimated increase of approximately $22.78 per month for a home assessed at $45,000 before STAR exemptions.
District officials said the approved budget includes implementation of a new elementary literacy program for pre-K through grade 5, distribution of new Chromebooks to students in grades 5 and 9, professional development for middle school academic teams and the addition of three middle school sports teams.
The district also said the spending plan continues efforts to reduce reliance on reserve funds, which have been used to balance the budget since the 2017-18 school year.
Other Propositions
Voters also approved the library budget, 1,356-331.
The Historical Society budget, Proposition 3, passed 1,367-203.
Voters also approved Proposition 4, 1,211-462, authorizing the district to use $1.1 million from its Capital Reserve Fund for facility, instructional and security upgrades at no additional tax increase.
Projects included in Proposition 4 include high school auditorium sound and lighting upgrades, relocation of the high school weight room into a fitness center, math classroom whiteboard upgrades and districtwide security camera additions and upgrades.
Board Of Education Election
Incumbent Debra Mitchell was re-elected to her library seat after running unopposed. Her term ends on June 30, 2031.
In the contested race for a three-year term ending June 30, 2029, Kyle Valentine defeated Jason Rowland.
Valentine defeated Jason Rowland for the seat held by James J. Bertsch Jr.
Incumbent Thomas Cooley also won re-election to a separate three-year term ending June 30, 2029.
District officials said election results remain unofficial pending certification by the district clerk.
