Sunrise Drive Elementary School Hosts First Responders Parade

Third Annual Event Honors Local Heroes

This post was contributed by a community member.

Sunrise Drive Elementary School recently hosted its third annual First Responder Parade, bringing together students, staff, families, and members of the Sayville community to honor the everyday heroes who serve on the front lines. The event celebrated firefighters, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers, doctors, nurses, sheriffs, police officers, detectives, and other first responders whose dedication and service help keep the community safe each day.

“This event is a powerful reminder of the importance of gratitude, service, and community,” Dr. James Foy, Sunrise Drive Elementary School Principal, said. “Our students had the opportunity to personally recognize and thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to helping others each and every day. We hope this experience leaves a lasting impression and teaches our children the importance of appreciation and respect for those who serve our communities.”

The celebration began in the morning, as students arrived to the stirring sounds of a live bagpiper welcoming them off the buses and first responders gathered inside the school cafeteria. The parade officially stepped off at 10 a.m., led by the Color Guard and fourth- and- fifth-grade Scouts carrying banners.

The Sayville High School Marching Band, under the direction of Kerri Van Boxel, followed with an energetic musical performance. First responders from fire and rescue departments, EMS and medical teams, and law enforcement agencies processed around the school grounds. The parade completed two laps around the property, passing beneath a large American flag suspended overhead by a fire department bucket truck while students and community members cheered enthusiastically throughout the event.

Following the outdoor festivities, guests were invited to the cafeteria for refreshments. The celebration continued with a special performance by the Sunrise Drive fifth grade band, led by Mr. Spera, who performed a selection of songs in tribute to the honored guests.

The First Responder Parade began three years ago after a Sunrise Drive parent shared the idea with the PTA and school administration. Since then, it has grown into a cherished annual tradition made possible through the collaboration and dedication of staff members, volunteers, the PTA, and community partners. Special thanks were extended to Ms. Clemenz, Ms. Grosso, Ms. Lipari, and Ms. McManus—along with the many teachers, staff members, and volunteers—who helped organize and support the successful event.
